Biography:
Born in County Donegal, Jimmy Murray moved to Glasgow with his married brother and family to work as a miner. He began playing football with noted Junior club Shettleston, located in the East End of Glasgow, before returning to Ireland. He started his senior football career with near-by Derry Celtic before spending a successful few seasons as inside-left with Distillery, claiming League and Cup medals and scoring in a 1905 2-0 Co. Antrim Shield win over Linfield. He also scored a hat-trick against his old club Derry Celtic in a League match in November 1905 and gained his first representative honour in October 1905 when he played for the Irish League in a 4-0 defeat by the Football League.

On the 28th April 1906 Murray played for Linfield against Aston Villa as a move towards signing for the Blues. However such a move did not take place as he went back to Glasgow in search of work. Setting up residence in the Glasgow area he turned out for Shettleston Juniors for a couple of seasons before being spotted by Motherwell.

Murray signed with Motherwell where he hit an astonishing goalscoring run that fired the normally struggling ‘Well to mid-table security and a place in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals. Murray’s goals earned him a place in the Ireland side for the 1910 Home Nations games and he made his international debut in a 1-1 draw with England. On the 12th February 1910 he became the first player to be capped when playing for Motherwell (Charlie Robertson became the first Scottish International at Motherwell on the 5th March 1910). In late-March 1910 he moved to Sheffield Wednesday and it was while with the Owls that he claimed his final Ireland cap, in a 4-1 defeat by Wales.

Murray returned to Ireland in 1911. He played a few matches back with Derry Celtic before rejoining Motherwell. He failed to make the grade back at Fir Park and returned to Ireland where he settled permanently in his home town of Kilmacrenan.

Biography:
In a ten-year international career Steve Robinson won just seven caps, scant reward for one of the most gifted midfield players appearing in the English lower-leagues.

Released by cash-strapped Luton in May 2008, attempts by Robinson to find a new club were scuppered by injury. He was appointed as the IFA's County Londonderry Performance Coach and then became assistant-manager of Northern Ireland's Under-19 side. In January 2012 he was appointed assistant-manager at his home-town club, Lisburn Distillery.

In February 2012 he was appointed as Northern Ireland's Under-21 team manager on a short-term basis. In October he was confirmed as manager of the Under-19 and Under-17 teams. A re-jig of the underage coaching set-ups saw him take charge of the Under-21 and Under-17 teams from April 2013. In early 2014 he stepped down from his role with the Under-21s to work within the IFA's Elite Development Programme. He retained his post as Under-17 manager and also took charge of the Under-16 Schoolboys side. In September 2014 he also joined-up with the senior set-up as coach.

Robinson left the Irish FA's Elite Development Programme in February 2015 to take up the post of Motherwell assistant manager, he remained a part of Michael O'Neill's senior international backroom team. In September 2015 he was appointed joint-caretaker-manager at Motherwell along with Stephen Craigan. Shortly after returning from Euro 2016 he quit his Northern Ireland role and was appointed manager at Oldham Athletic, but was sacked the following January. A month later he re-joined to the staff at Motherwell and within a fortnight was appointed manager following the sacking of Mark McGhee.

Biography:
Brian McLean had won youth caps for Scotland prior to deciding to play for Northern Ireland, the country of his grandparents’ birth. An accomplished defender, he had came through the ranks at Rangers and earned his first call-up to the Northern Ireland Under-21 set-up in early 2005. Injury meant that he had to wait until August for his debut, in a 2-2 draw with the Republic of Ireland.

In an effort to gain firstteam experience, McLean spent the 2005/06 season on loan at Motherwell. Initially he played in midfield or at right-back, before establishing himself alongside Northern Ireland defender, Stephen Craigan in the centre of defence. His performances earned him rave reviews and comparisons to then Well manager, and ex-Rangers and England star, Terry Butcher. Lawrie Sanchez had no qualms in including McLean in the Full Northern Ireland panel to face Portugal in November 2005, though he was an unused substitute. The following March he was again included in the squad to face Estonia, and this time he came off the bench as a half-time substitute for Craigan, in a 1-0 win.

In April 2006 McLean was named SPL Young Player of the Month for March and was due to make his competitive Under-21 debut against Liechtenstein when he was suddenly withdrawn from the squad. It emerged that he wasn’t actually eligible to play for Northern Ireland having played in a UEFA competition for Scotland at Under-17 level. Further frustration was added with the knowledge that had he played a competitive game for Northern Ireland, at any level, prior to his 21st birthday he would have been allowed to switch allegiances. The Irish FA appealed to FIFA for leniency for the player due to their own “administrative error” but to no avail. Forty-five minutes was to be the sum total of McLean’s Northern Ireland career.

After much negotiation, McLean’s move to Motherwell from Rangers was made permanent in the summer of 2006, though his second season at Fir Park season was ruined by injury. In his absence Motherwell flirted with relegation, eventually finishing six points, and two places, above relegated Dunfermline.

After three seasons, two ruptured cruciate ligaments and 27 appearances for Motherwell, McLean joined Falkirk having failed to agree a new contract at Fir Park.

Biography:
Colin O'Neill emerged as a 16-year-old flying outside-right with Ards in 1980. Over the next eight years he had spells with Larne, Ballymena United and Portadown, developing into a battling midfielder, and picking up Inter-League honours along the way.

In September 1988 Motherwell boss Tommy McLean decided to take a chance on the, by now, chubby midfielder. After a few months in the reserves, getting into shape, O'Neill made his Scottish League bow against Hamilton Accies in November. He held on to his place for the rest of the season, adding steel to the 'Well midfield as they pulled clear of the relegation places. By this stage he had already earned a nickname from the Fir Park fans; they had lovingly christened him 'Psycho'. O'Neill's performances also clearly impressed Billy Bingham as he was called into the Northern Ireland squad for the end-of-season friendly with Chile, and he was to win his second cap early the following season in Dublin, against the Republic.

O'Neill developed further as a player during the 1989/90 season, continuing to live up to his nickname, but also beginning to spray the ball about with some poise as Motherwell put in an early title challenge before settling for mid-table security.

The 1990/91 season cemented Colin O'Neill's place in Motherwell folklore, but sadly also proved to be his last in Scottish football. In a Scottish Cup quarter-final replay penalty shoot-out with Morton, with the scores tied at 4-4, it fell to O'Neill to take the crucial kick. After dispatching his penalty with some aplomb he cartwheeled away in celebration.

This was nothing compared to the semi-final replay victory over Celtic, as O'Neill thundered home from 35 yards as Motherwell clinched a 4-2 win, and a place in the Final. A knee injury put his place in the final in some doubt, but, perhaps out of sentimentality, Tommy McClean included O'Neill in the 13 man squad, bringing him on for the last three minutes of a 4-3 victory over Dundee United.

Colin O'Neill was to spend much of the following season attempting to shake off that knee injury, but it was not to be, and he left Motherwell to become manager of Coleraine in July 1992. His spell with Coleraine proved to be brief, as he left the club after just 3 months. He made a brief playing comeback with Ards in 1997. Later he became a member of Ronnie McFall's coaching staff back at Portadown before spells as assistant-manager then director of football at Larne. In September 2013 he was appointed manager of Wellington Rec.

In his report on O'Neill's international debut against Chile, Malcolm Brodie noted:
O'Neill, much more mature in every respect now from his Portadown days, revealed real class; he was solid in his tackles, intelligent in his distribution and he fitted perfectly into the set up. He looks the natural successor to David McCreery and perhaps at last Bingham may have solved the midfield problem which has long plagued him since the retirement of Martin O'Neill and the premature axing of Sammy McIlroy.
... an extract which illustrates the loss Northern Ireland suffered when O'Neill's career was prematurely ended.
