Biography:
A regular captain for Northern Ireland at every Youth level up to Under-20, Michael O'Connor became involved in a tug-of-war between the IFA and the FAI and he actually turned out for the Republic of Ireland's Under-21 side. Because those appearances were not competitive he was able to change his mind and in November 2007 was included in Roy Millar's Under-21 panel for matches against Luxembourg and Moldova. In March 2008 Nigel Worthington then included O'Connor in the Full squad for a friendly match against Georgia.

A product of the highly successful Crewe Alexandra Academy, O'Connor helped Alex's youth side to the 2004 FA Youth Cup semi-final. Originally a more attacking player, he has developed into an effective defensive midfielder using his size to great effect. His League debut came is a late substitute in a 2-1 win over Brighton in February 2006 and he was a regular feature in the Crewe line-up from the 2006/07 season on.

On 6th March 2009, O'Connor joined Lincoln City on loan after falling out with Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson. He was made available for transfer at the end of the campaign and after being linked with a permanent move to Lincoln and training with Hibernian he signed for Scunthorpe in a deal reported to be worth £250,000. With The Iron he teamed up with Northern Ireland teammate, Grant McCann.

Although impressing in the Championship on a regular basis, O'Connor has struggled to impress his international boss, Nigel Worthington. As such he has been only an occasional squad member, but despite news of his frustrations appearing in the press he has not been completely ignored.

Biography:
A player long-admired by Sammy McIlroy, Gareth McAuley made his ‘senior’ international debut in a ‘B’ match against Future Scotland in May 2003. Although the game ended in a 2-1 defeat, it is notable for the fact Northern Ireland scored through Steve Jones – the only goal scored by a ‘senior’ player during the infamous drought.

Usually a centre-back during his Irish League days with Crusaders and Coleraine (for whom he played in two Irish Cup Finals), McAuley became more familiar as a full-back, right or left, after moving to the Football League. A move across the water was first mooted when Sammy McIlroy offered him a trial at Stockport in June 2004, but it was Lincoln that claimed his signature for an undisclosed fee that August.

He quickly started making waves in League Two attracting interest from some larger clubs on the way to helping Lincoln to successive Play-Off qualifications in 2005 and 2006. He was awarded his first Full international cap for a depleted Northern Ireland side in the gala friendly against Germany to celebrate the Irish FA’s 125th Anniversary in June 2005. The following March he started his first international against Estonia at a snowy Windsor Park.

McAuley took his cap tally to five during the 2006 summer tour of the USA, making him Lincoln’s most capped player. On returning from the US, with his two-year deal at Sincil Bank expired, McAuley opted to make a Bosman free-transfer to Championship Leicester City. At the Walkers Stadium he played briefly under Nigel Worthington who was caretaker-manager at the tail-end of the 2006/07 season prior to his appointment as Northern Ireland manager.
.
Following Leicester's relegation to League One in 2008 McAuley opted to remain in the Championship, joining Ipswich Town for a fee believed to be around £1,000,000. He was immediately installed as first-team captain by Tractor Boys' manager, Jim Magilton.

McAuley scored his first international goal on his fourteenth appearance against San Marino in February 2009. He captained the team for the first time against Slovenia in March 2011.

In May 2011 McAuley rejected a new contract at Ipswich as he sought a club playing a higher level. He rejected an offer from Rangers in order to join English Premier League side, West Brom. As a sixteen-year-old he had turned down a move to Spurs to concentrate on his studies - at the age of 31 it had been a long journey back! The step up in class didn't phase McAuley at all as he was voted as West Brom's Players' Player of the Year and Supporters' Player of the Year in 2013.

Biography:
Plucked from the Irish League for £5,000 in August 2005, Jeff Hughes quickly established himself as one of the hottest young prospects in League Two with Lincoln City. An attacking left-back or left-winger, he also proved a more than useful goalscorer, finding the net three times in the two-legged play-off semi-final matches against Bristol Rovers in 2007, though the Imps still lost 7-4 on aggregate.

First capped Northern Ireland during the 2006 US Tour, he has also been a regular for the Under-21 side in the past few seasons

In July 2007 Hughes move to Crystal Palace in a deal reported to be worth £250,000. The fee, which could rise to £350,000 depending on appearances and other criteria, includes a 25% portion due to Larne as part of a sell-on clause. He failed to make an impact at Selhurst Park and after several loan spells he left the Eagles for Bristol Rovers in the summer of 2008.

A regular among the goals during three seasons with the Pirates, many called for his recall to the Northern Ireland squad. When Rovers were relegated to League Two at the end of the 2010/11 he was released as the club attempted to balance their books. He remained in League One with Notts County.

Having been ignored completely be Nigel Worthington, Hughes was finally recalled to the Northern Ireland squad by Michael O'Neill in May 2012, but he failed to add to his two senior caps.

A move to Fleetwood in 2013 was blighted by a broken leg and Hughes was released after two seasons.
