Biography:
Johnny Flynn captained Northern Ireland's Under-21 side. Transferred from Ballymena to Blackburn in January 2008 after a successful trial, he was involved in Rovers' 2008/09 pre-season programme.

On 16th October 2009 he joined Jim Harvey's Chester City on a months loan, during which time he "impressed as an all round central defender". He made his debut in a 1-0 Conference win over Gateshead and scored his first goal the following week in a 1-1 FA Cup draw with Barrow.

On 27th November Flynn joined Accrington Stanley on another month-long loan deal. He made his debut in a 4-2 win at against Torquay on 5th December. The deal was then extended to the end of the season but disappointingly he made just eight appearances all season.

Also capable as a full-back, despite Blackburn indicating that they had "high hopes" for Flynn's future, he was allowed to leave Ewood Park for Ross County on a free transfer in the early weeks of the 2010/11 season. Although he had never played in the Rovers first team, observers feel that he is "better" than the Scottish First Division.

Flynn never really established himself at Ross County, and he played just seven times as the First Division title was claimed in 2012. He then remained in the Scottish second tier, signing for Falkirk for a nominal fee. Flynn spent the 2012/13 season as a regular in the centre of Falkirk's defence, but was relegated to a back-up role the following campaign. His final appearances for the club where in the Premiership Play-Offs.

In March 2014 it was announced that he had signed a pre-contract agreement with Cliftonville.

Biography:
In the 1950s the Irish FA regularly hosted the British Army for representative matches. The teams that were selected by Peter Doherty in these games featured fringe internationals, experienced Irish League campaigners and possible stars of the future in what could be considered the "B" international games of the day. One such "star of the future" to appear in these games was Burnley's Bobby Burke, a player who had been plucked from junior football in his native Ballymena by Burnley in 1955.

Burke made a bright start at Turf Moor, playing in twenty matches mainly at inside-right, as stand-in for Jimmy McIlroy. However, when his fellow Ulster-man returned to the squad for the 1956/57 season Burke was sidelined and his final appearance in claret and blue came against Luton in April 1956. The following October brought his selection for the Irish FA in a 2-1 defeat by the Army.

After two seasons without any firstteam action, Burke left Burnley to sign for Chester. His stay at Sealand was brief and in the early-sixties he was back in Ballymena, playing for United. While with the Braidmen he represented the Irish League, playing in a 3-1 win over the League of Ireland in March 1963.

Biography:
Tom Sloan was a lightly built midfielder, busy and pacy, who burst on to the Irish league scene as a teenager. In 1978 he was a key member of the Ballymena team that reached the Irish Cup Final, only to lose to Linfield, and was rewarded with an Under-21 cap against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin and the title of Ulster Young Player of the Year. Also a member of that Ballymena side was Tom’s elder brother John, who would spend several years on the fringe of the Northern Ireland side without ever winning a cap.

In the summer of 1978 Manchester United pipped Spurs for Sloan's signature in a £20,000 deal. His Football League debut came early as he deputised for Lou Macari in a 2-0 win over Ipswich on 18 November 1978. He made a total of four League appearances that season (including one as substitute for Jimmy Greenhoff in a 5-3 home defeat by West Brom), and at the end of the season was called into the Northern Ireland squad. Danny Blanchflower awarded him his first cap in a 1-0 British Championship defeat by Scotland in May 1979. He made further appearances as a substitute against Wales and Denmark. Although he did stay in the thoughts of both Blanchflower and his successor, Billy Bingham, over the following three years, Sloan never added to his cap total.

Over the following three seasons Sloan made just eight more appearances for Manchester United, all but one from the substitutes’ bench, and at the end of the 1981/82 season was released. Signed by Chester, a club freshly relegated to Division Four, Sloan was a regular in a side that settled into mid-table solidity. In the Football League Trophy Chester enjoyed a superb run, Sloan scoring twice, including in an emphatic 5-0 win over Shrewsbury, before losing out to Lincoln in the semi-finals.

After five eventful years in the English game, Sloan returned home to sign for Linfield. He spent three seasons at Windsor Park and, despite his share of injuries, picked up a clutch of medals. Part-time football necessitated that Sloan return to his trade as a self-employed plasterer. In 1986 he left Linfield for Coleraine and in 1991 he played his final senior football back at Ballymena.

Biography:
A sublime dribbler and a master of ball control, Bobby Irvine was amongst the most gifted attacking players of his generation. Signed by Everton for £500 in September 1921, he made his Football League debut in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in November 1921 at Anfield. He quickly became a crowd favourite at Goodison, his bravery and determination coupled with his thrilling skills entertained the fans for six seasons. More of a creator than a scorer, Irvine normally played at inside-right, but when deployed at centre-forward he proved an effective goal-getter, best illustrated by a hat-trick against Aston Villa in January 1922.

First selected for Ireland in March 1922, Irvine played at centre-forward in a 2-1 defeat by Scotland, indeed five of his first six caps were won leading the attack. An early personal best performance came with two goals in a 3-0 win over Wales in Wrexham, but he will be best remembered for his role in 2-1 and 2-0 defeats of England at Windsor Park in 1923 and 1927, and for his goal that gave Ireland a 3-2 lead at Anfield in 1926, only for the game to finish 3-3.

Troubled by injuries through a number of spells of his career, Irvine left Everton in March 1928 having made just nine appearances in what was a title winning campaign for the Toffees. Snapped up by Portsmouth, he made his Fratton Park debut in a 1-0 win over Manchester United on 17th March. He helped his new-club to the FA Cup Final in 1929, but injury robbed him of a place in the final line-up as they lost 2-0 to Bolton. In August 1929 Irvine joined Welsh club, Connah’s Quay, where he became the only player from that club to be capped for Ireland.

With Connah’s Quay suffering severe financial difficulties, Irvine returned to Ireland, signing for Derry City. He marked his Brandywell debut with a goal in a 1-0 Gold Cup quarter-final win over Larne on 3rd September 1931. With Derry, Irvine took his caps total to 15, and in October 1932 he also played twice for the Irish League, in 5-2 and 4-1 defeats by the English and Scottish Leagues respectively.

Irvine returned to the England in May 1933 with Division Three (South) club, Watford. He played his last Football League match in spring 1934. In November 1934 he was one of five Waterford players reportedly suspended "sine die" after refusing to return on the bus following a match in Sligo. Other later clubs were Brideville (February 1936) and Leicester Post Office Engineers (November 1936). With his playing days on the wane, it was written of him: “There is no man who takes harder knocks and squeal less than Irvine.”
