Northern Ireland Players in the Scottish Premiership

The Scottish Professional Football League Premiership was formed in 2013 when the Scottish Premier League (SPL, founded 1998) "re-merged" with the Scottish Football League (founded 1890) to once again form a single governing body for senior league clubs in Scotland, the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). All four divisions within the league structure were re-branded, with the Premiership as the top level with the Championship, League 1 and League 2 beneath.

The following Northern Ireland players have featured in the Premiership to date...

Biography:

Josh Magennis claimed Northern Ireland Under-17 caps as a goalkeeper and featured on the bench for Cardiff before being converted to a forward. He made a handful of outfield appearances for the Bluebirds, earning a place in the Northern Ireland squad that traveled to the USA and Chile in the summer of 2010.

On his return from international duty, Magennis was released by Cardiff. He joined Aberdeen, but endured a difficult first season at Pittodrie and it seemed likely that he would again be released until Craig Brown decided to give him a run in the team at full-back late in the 2011/12 season. He remained with Aberdeen until 2014, earning a reputation as something of a jack-of-all-trades. For Northern Ireland he continued as a regular squad member, coming off the bench to add a bit of muscle in whatever position was required.

A 2014 move to Kilmarnock saw Magennis enjoy a sustained run in attack for the first time in his career, though he struggled to find the net on a regular basis, dividing opinion among fans. For Northern Ireland's successful Euro 2016 qualification campaign Michael O'Neill installed him as first choice back-up to Kyle Lafferty and he became a regular feature as a second-half substitute, with his presence notably aiding Northern Ireland to a late win over the Faroe Islands and an even later equaliser against Hungary in September 2015. The following month, with Kyle Lafferty suspended for the key qualifying match against Greece, Magennis started his first competitive match. His looping header that put Northern Ireland 2-0 up early in the second-half was greeted by emotional celebrations, essentially sealing the team's place in France and answering the critics who had questioned Magennis' place in the team.

2015/16 saw Magennis enjoy his best season in front of goal as he scored thirteen times for a struggling Kilmarnock side that only avoided relegation from the Premiership with a play-off victory over Falkirk. He traveled to Euro 2016 with the emergence of Conor Washington and the club-form of Will Grigg putting his position as first-choice back-up under threat. Magennis need not have worried as his unique attributes continued to be recognised as useful by Michael O'Neill.

Early in the 2016/17 season Magennis was the subject of several bids from English League One side Charlton and eventually a £250,000 fee was agreed.

Biography:
A highly-rated winger with Derry City, Niall McGinn was linked with a move across the water, with Chelsea, Celtic and Swansea City among the potential suiters. An all-round sportsman, he also played Gaelic football for Donaghmore and Tyrone Under-21s.

A product of the successful Dungannon Swifts youth set-up, McGinn signed his first professional contract in 2007 after helping the reserves to successes in the Bob Radcliffe Cup, George Wilson Cup and Reserve League during the 2005/06 season. In January 2008 he transferred to Derry City and in September he scored twice in a 6-1 rout of Wexford Youths in the League Cup Final. His season was rounded off with the PFAI Young Player of the Year award.

McGinn's continued good form, primarily on the right-wing, saw him included in the Northern Ireland squad for an international friendly against Hungary in November 2008. McGinn was thus the first Derry player to earn a call-up to the Northern Ireland squad since Liam Coyle in 1989. He impressed during his second-half appearance despite a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

On 16 December 2008 McGinn sealed a move to Celtic for a fee in the region of £200,000. He joined up with ex-Candystripes teammate Pat McCourt at Parkhead. A match-day regular at Celtic Park through the 2009/10 and first half of 2010/11, McGinn appeared to fall from the firstteam picture due to injury. He joined League One side Brentford on a season-long loan deal for 2011/12 and was released the following summer.

McGinn remained in Scotland, signing for Aberdeen. Dons' manager Craig Brown stated that he saw McGinn as a forward, and his faith was rewarded with a good early-season goal scoring run. That form also transferred to the international stage as he scored his first Northern Ireland goal in a famous 1-1 draw in Portugal. His performances through the 2012/13 season saw him shortlisted for the SPFA Player of the Year award. In 2013/14 he won his first major honour in Scotland as Aberdeen defeated Inverness on penalties in the League Cup Final at Celtic Park.

2016/17 brought Aberdeen runners-up spots in the Scottish League, Cup and League Cup as McGinn was heavily linked with a move away from Pittodrie. He made a surprise move to Korean side, Gwangju, becoming the first Irish footballer to play in the country. His time in South Korea was ultimately frustrating as he struggled to settle with a club who were doomed to relegation from the K League. In December he agreed a three-and-a-half year deal to return to Aberdeen.

Biography:
Eddie Carroll began his footballing career with hometown Junior club, Bessbrook Athletics. Later he played with Newry Town before making it to senior football with Glenavon where his "speed, dash and resource" guaranteed a continuous supply of goals and brought an international call-up in 1925 and reported interest from Cardiff City and Liverpool.

In a seventeen year senior career, Carroll is reckoned to have scored over 200 goals for his seven clubs, but undoubtedly his best times were with Dundalk where he scored 113 goals in three spells (47 League, 9 FAI Cup, 41 Shield and 16 Others) and still holds many club goalscoring records.

In 1925 Carroll joined Aberdeen. He failed to make much of an impact on the firstteam, scoring his only goal on the last of his five appearances in a 1-1 draw with Raith. He did however have much better luck in the Reserves, scoring an amazing 18 goals in a 4 game spell during the 1925/26 season and adding another six in three games at the beginning of the following campaign. Dundee United stepped in with a £500 bid and he marked his debut with a goal in a 2-1 defeat by Kilmarnock. He managed eleven goals in the 1926/27 season, including a hattrick against Hearts, one against Rangers in a 2-0 win and another in a 3-3 draw with Celtic in his final Scottish League game, though United were still relegated at the end of the season.

Carroll - "a dashing, trustful leader, with a good shooting boot" - twice represented the Free State League, scoring in a 4-3 win over the Welsh League and a 1-2 defeat by the Irish League.
