Hughes was on the bench for a Premier League game at Sheffield United within a few weeks of signing for Liverpool. It was the first time a Northern Ireland-born player had been in the matchday squad for a Liverpool league game since Sammy Smyth in 1954.

Hughes was promoted from an Under-21 training squad to the Northern Ireland senior panel for the March 2021 internationals.

A loan spell at Stalybridge Celtic in the second half of the 2021/22 season was cut short after he suffered a broken sternum in a road accident.
