His last game for Northern Ireland at home was my first and that was the day the "bug" bit me. We beat Scotland 3-2 and the winning goal was scored with an overhead kick by Willie Irvine. It was into the Kop end and i was squeezed against the wall at the bottom of the terracing below the Gallaghers sign. I think Jimmy McIlroy was captain and he wore the number 10 jersey.

During 1960 I was a salesman covering East Lancashire. A good customer (Mr Hesmondalgh) who had a grocery in Clitheroe and ran a junior team in the town had difficulty finding a well known footballer to present cup medals. I suggested he contacted Burnley, about 25 miles away and ask Jimmy McIlroy. On returning a month later he told me he had taken my advice and as a result Jimmy agreed to do the honours. At the end of the evening, Mr Hesmondalgh asked what he owed Jimmy and was answered with "Nothing, you paid me the compliment of asking me to do something I thoroughly enjoyed.
IT SHOULD BE REMEMBERED IN THOSE DAYS PLAYERS RECEIVED £30 PER WEEK !
